Top 5 Dog Training Problems and How to Fix Them

Writer: April RatherApril Rather

Training your dog can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. If you’re struggling with common behavior issues, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Here are five common dog training problems and how to fix them.

1. Pulling on the Leash 🚶‍♂️🐕

The Problem: Your dog drags you down the street instead of walking politely. The Fix: Use positive reinforcement to reward loose-leash walking. Stop moving when your dog pulls and only continue when the leash is slack. A front-clip harness or gentle leader can also help.

2. Jumping on People 🦘🐶

The Problem: Your dog jumps on guests out of excitement.

The Fix: Teach an alternative behavior like “sit” when greeting people. I found this to be hard with Raj and instead kept him crated till everyone settled down and then I let him out. Less movement seemed to help him a lot. Reward them when all four paws are on the ground.

3. Not Coming When Called 📢🐕

The Problem: Your dog ignores you when you call them.

The Fix: Make “come” a fun and rewarding experience! Use high-value treats, praise, and play. Avoid calling your dog for negative things like baths or leaving the park. Keep them on a leash until they are reliably listening to you.

4. Excessive Barking 🗣️🐶

The Problem: Your dog barks at everything—people, other dogs, noises.

The Fix: Identify the trigger and teach a “quiet” command. Reward calm behavior and redirect their attention to a toy or training exercise. Teach 'quet' when NOTHING is happening. Say "quiet" and give a treat. Do this ONE MILLION TIMES (kidding) then you can start adding in slight disturbences like a pen falling on the ground.

5. Potty Training Accidents 🚽🐾

The Problem: Your dog still has accidents inside.

The Fix: Stick to a consistent schedule, take them out frequently, and praise them when they potty outside. Clean accidents thoroughly to remove lingering smells. If they fake potty outside then put them back in the crate for one minute and try again. Have a fun party when they do potty outside.

Training takes time, patience, and consistency. Keep sessions fun, and remember—progress, not perfection! 🐾✨
