Solving the Most Frustrating Dog Training Challenges

Writer: April RatherApril Rather

Training a dog isn’t always smooth sailing. Some behaviors can test your patience, but with the right approach, you can turn things around! Here’s how to tackle some of the toughest training problems.

1. My Dog Won’t Listen!

This is often a case of distractions or lack of motivation. Make sure you're using high-value rewards like cheese or chicken and keep training sessions short and fun.

2. My Dog Chews Everything!

Dogs chew for many reasons—teething, boredom, or stress. Provide appropriate chew toys and redirect them whenever they grab something off-limits. Plenty of exercise helps, too!

3. My Dog Is Too Excited Around Other Dogs!

Socialization is important, but if your dog gets overly excited, practice calm greetings. Use distance at first, reward calm behavior, and slowly decrease space over time.

4. My Dog Is Afraid of New Things!

Confidence-building is key! Introduce new experiences slowly and use positive reinforcement. Never force them into scary situations—let them explore at their own pace.

5. My Dog Only Listens When I Have Treats!

It’s time to fade the treats! Start by rewarding every time, then gradually switch to intermittent rewards. Praise, play, and affection can also be great motivators!

Dog training is a journey, and every dog learns at their own pace. Stay patient, stay consistent, and most importantly—enjoy the process! 🐶❤️
