Maximizing Canine Health: Exploring the Benefits of Raw and Wet Food Diets

Writer: April RatherApril Rather

As pet owners, we all want our dogs to live vibrant and healthy lives. One effective way to support their well-being is by choosing the right diet. Raw and wet food diets offer unique benefits that can help boost your dog's health and vitality. This post will dive into the advantages of these diets and how they can enhance your dog's quality of life.

Understanding Raw Food Diets

A raw food diet, often called a "BARF" diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), includes uncooked, unprocessed meat, bones, fruits, and vegetables. Advocates claim this diet resembles what dogs naturally eat and can lead to improved health.

For instance, many dog owners report noticeable increases in energy after switching to raw food. I experienced this when Zoey turned about 6 and I switched her to raw. She is now ten and acts like a puppy!

Another noteworthy benefit is dental health. Chewing raw meat and bones can significantly reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Rumor has it that kibble will scrape off any food particles and this simpley isn't true.

Analyzing Wet Food Diets

Wet food diets consist of canned or pouch-based meals that typically contain higher moisture levels than dry kibble. These meals can provide several benefits to canines.

One major advantage is hydration. Many dogs do not drink enough water daily, but wet food can contribute significantly to their moisture intake. For senior dogs, this can be crucial for maintaining kidney health.

Furthermore, wet food is easier for many dogs to eat. The soft texture benefits puppies, senior dogs, and those with dental issues.

Potential Health Benefits of Raw and Wet Diets

Both raw and wet foods offer specific health benefits that can enhance dogs' overall wellbeing.

Raw diets are often linked to healthier skin and shinier coats. The natural fats found in raw meats and fish can improve skin health, potentially reducing itching linked to allergies. Raj's allergies and inability to settle were two reasons I started looking into feeding him raw food. If he does have kibble for meals (as it is convenient and stores nicely) I can tell in the up tick of his restlessness and itchiness.

Moreover, both diets can aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Raw foods allow for better portion control, and the moisture in wet foods can enhance feelings of fullness, minimizing overeating.

Final Thoughts

Both raw and wet food diets can provide important health benefits that enhance your dog's quality of life. Raw food diets typically deliver higher protein, greater nutrient density, and improvements to dental and skin health. Meanwhile, wet food is excellent for hydration, palatability, and weight management.

For many the cost of raw or wet food is too great. Stay tuned for another article on what to do if you find you can not afford raw food.
